Day four: Haast to Manapouri
Well whanau, what a day!
Tiara Tuesday.
Only 11 one-way bridges today and at number four my photographer ‘Louise’ missed a once in at life time opportunity and that was having to slow down for a hare also crossing the bridge. From that point she did travel with her phone in her hand. I know, One job!
We stopped at the Fantail falls and blue pools which, like most things here, did not disappoint.
We got many comments about our Tiara’s. Lots of people wished they had got the memo.
Once we arrived in Manapouri, we drove around looking for our accommodation. We passed one place that looked a little unkempt and somewhat dodgy — unfortunately, that turned out to be where we were meant to stay. To make matters worse, reception was closed.
There was another group who had arrived earlier and, like us, found no staff, no keys — nothing! They’d discovered a few rooms left unlocked and had made themselves at home after speaking with the owner, who told them the business was bankrupt.
After a quick chat, we decided to cut our losses and find somewhere else. Luckily, one nearby place knew the receptionist from our original accommodation. After a rather confusing phone call, we managed to get in touch with a young lady, Rachel, who looked after an Airbnb (owned by Tim) we could book into. She was an absolute lifesaver as there was nothing else available in Manapouri, and the place turned out to be perfect.
