Day one: Palmy to St Arnauds

Day One – Our Epic South Island Journey Begins

After boarding the Aratika ferry, we set off south across the Cook Strait and through the beautiful Tory Channel (Kura Te Au) to Picton. Along the way, dolphins entertained and the scenery was just stunning — an exciting start to the trip!

From Picton, our road trip began through the stunning Wairau Valley, passing by many familiar-named wineries,  so tempted to stop and sample. Eventually, we arrived at our first overnight stop, the peaceful alpine village of St Arnaud.

Before settling in, we couldn’t resist heading down to the Lake Rotoiti jetty for our first photo opportunity — the perfect start to what promises to be an unforgettable journey.

Recommendation.  Alphine Lodge Restaurant.  Green lipped mussels were amazing.

I know what you are thinking “they passed wineries!’.  Shocking I know,  but there are over 408 wineries in the South Island so we will come across some more on our travels.

And fear not my friends,  we also brought a couple of bottles with us (and have also restocked once already), just in case.
